Let's Talk About Habakkuk 2:14
Isn’t it interesting how certain verses really pop off the page during certain seasons of life? Lately, Habakkuk 2:14 has been captivating my prayers and imagination.
I want to invite you to reflect on this incredible verse with me!
Habakkuk 2:14 (NIV) says:
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
I don’t know about you, but when I read that, I get really excited. Something about that imagery just ignites my imagination.
As you meditate on this verse, I invite you to answer some questions. Spend a few moments quietly contemplating these or use them as journal prompts, but don’t rush past this.
What does this verse mean to you?
What images come to mind?
How does this verse make you feel? What senses are engaged by this verse?
How can you apply this verse to your life?
Some Thoughts on Habakkuk 2:14
The phrase “waters cover the sea” brings to mind images of both creation (Genesis 1) and the flood (Genesis 7).
In the midst of a pronouncement of divine judgment, this message of hope is found. This verse reminds us of the creating and re-creating nature of God. Just as God would bring judgment and destruction upon nations, he would also redeem and re-create.
Praise God for that!
When I read this verse, I think of what it feels like to be in the ocean. There is no distinction between the water and the ocean—you’re surrounded by it. It’s all around you. You can’t escape it.
I imagine that the earth will be so full of the knowledge of God’s glory that it will become the air we breathe. We’ll be surrounded by it. It will be the thoughts we think and the conversations we have.
The knowledge of the glory of God will be so pervasive that it will completely alter everything we do and how we live.
I see this verse as one of intimacy with a God who loves us. Just as Adam and Noah walked closely with God, so will we. And we don’t have to wait until a future date, but we can start by drawing nearer to God. We can experience a more personal, more intimate knowledge of God and his glory today.
Habakkuk 2:14 brings me such peace and hope. I long for that day when the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of God’s glory. I’m also excited to partner with God and others to display his glory in little and big ways throughout my day.
